Frozen Chat vs WhatsApp
Both encrypt your messages. What differs is everything around them: your number, your contacts and the data about how you use it.
Comparison as of October 2026. Apps change; check each app's own documentation for the latest.
WhatsApp is the messenger most people already have, and credit where it is due: since 2016 it has encrypted personal chats end to end by default, using a design based on the Signal protocol. Meta can't read the content of your personal messages or calls.
But encryption protects the content. Who you talk to, when, from where, how often, and who is in your address book is metadata, and that is where WhatsApp and Frozen Chat are built very differently. This page compares the two as of October 2026, using what WhatsApp documents publicly.

Your identity: phone number vs username
A WhatsApp account is a phone number. It is how you sign up, how people find you and how your account is recovered. Anyone with your number can look you up, and people in groups you join can usually see it.
Frozen Chat accounts are usernames. There is no phone number or e-mail field in the system, so there is nothing to look up, leak or match against other databases. More on this in private messenger without a phone number.
Metadata: the part encryption doesn't cover
WhatsApp's privacy policy describes collecting account information, usage and log information, device and connection information (including IP addresses), and sharing some information with other Meta companies. That data is not your message text, but it can reveal a great deal about your life.
Frozen Chat is designed to have as little of it as possible. Servers keep no access logs and no IP addresses. Sealed sender means the server delivers messages without being told who sent them. Group names, photos and roles are encrypted, and the server only knows that certain devices follow an opaque group id. Push notifications carry no content, just “wake up”. The full list of what our server can and can't see is on the security page.
Contacts
To show which of your contacts use WhatsApp, the app can upload the phone numbers in your address book, including people who never signed up. Frozen Chat never reads your address book: you add people by username or QR code.
Backups
WhatsApp chat backups go to Google Drive or iCloud. You can turn on end-to-end encrypted backups, but it is off by default, so many people's backups are protected only by the cloud provider. Frozen Chat backups (on plans with backup space) are encrypted on your device before upload, and only your keys open them.
Post-quantum protection
Frozen Chat starts every chat with PQXDH, which adds a post-quantum ML-KEM key to the handshake, and runs groups on MLS with a hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-768 suite. That defends against “harvest now, decrypt later”: someone recording traffic today hoping to break it with a future quantum computer. As of October 2026 we are not aware of WhatsApp announcing post-quantum message encryption. Our explainer post-quantum encryption in messaging covers why it matters.
How each is paid for
WhatsApp is free. Meta earns from paid business messaging and, since 2025, from ads in the Updates tab (not in personal chats). Frozen Chat is paid: one-time licence keys bought with crypto on the pricing page, no subscription, no ads.
Where WhatsApp is the better choice
- Everyone you know is already on it. Its network is enormous.
- You need iPhone and desktop apps today.
- You want a free app and are comfortable with Meta holding your metadata.
- You talk to businesses that only offer WhatsApp support.
Where Frozen Chat is the better choice
- You don't want your phone number on your messaging account or in every group.
- You care about metadata, not just message content.
- You want no ads and no data sharing with a larger company.
- You want post-quantum keys for chats and groups now.
